Dunnellon Florida in Marion County Florida was the “Boomtown of the 1890's”. Eons ago when the sea covered the state of Florida, phosphate deposits were laid down in what is now Central Florida. These phosphate deposits were discovered in 1881 and Dunnellon Florida became the center of phosphate mining activity for North America.

Now historic downtown Dunnellon celebrates its past with the annual "Boomtown Days", a festival to recount the explosive growth to Dunnellon at the end of the 19th century. Boomtown Days attracts thousands of visitors to the quaint shops, restaurants and bed and breakfasts that occupy the historic district along Pennsylvania Avenue.

Also part of the "Nature Coast", Dunnellon has many crystal clear springs, one of which is the headwaters for the Rainbow River. Considered by many to be one of the most pristine and beautiful rivers in the State of Florida.

The Rainbow River and the area around it, known as Rainbow Springs, is a popular destination for nature lovers.

The warm summer days in Dunnellon are often wiled away by residents and visitors alike floating down the Rainbow River on inner tubes. There are also many hiking trails and nature trails and even aquatic trails accessible by kayak or canoe.

Another popular waterway in Dunnellon Florida is the Withlacoochee River. The Rainbow River runs into the Withlacoochee River, which is one of only a handful of rivers in North America that flows north.

The 157-mile long Withlacoochee River starts in the Green Swamp in Hernando County and flows north to the Gulf of Mexico at Yankeetown. The Withlacoochee River is a great river for fishing. Largemouth bass, panfish, and brown bullheads are abundant.

Lake Rousseau is another great fishing hole in Dunnellon. Lake Rousseau was formed by the Withlacoochee River, as part of the original Cross Florida Barge Canal project. Lake Rousseau is full of cypress trees that were flooded when the canal was built.

The abundant tree cover accomodate plenty of bluegill, redear sunfish, catfish, black crappie and largemouth bass. There is also a dam and lock system at one end on the lake.

Today Dunnellon is growing as people discover this gem of the “Nature Coast”. Dunnellon has much to offer its residents; shops and restaurants including Super Walmart, Walgreens, Winn Dixie, Sonic, Baskin Robbins, Dunkin Donuts, Pizza Hut, McDonalds as well as many local dining establishments such as the Levee and Don Pepe's.

And for other entertainment don't forget the 18 hole championship golf courses right in Dunnellon at the Villages of Rainbow Springs and Juliette Falls world renowned golf course.
