Another popular waterway in Dunnellon Florida is the Withlacoochee River. The Rainbow River runs into the Withlacoochee River, which is one of only a handful of rivers in North America that flows north.
The 157-mile long Withlacoochee River starts in the Green Swamp in Hernando County and flows north to the Gulf of Mexico at Yankeetown. The Withlacoochee River is a great river for fishing. Largemouth bass, panfish, and brown bullheads are abundant.
Lake Rousseau is another great fishing hole in Dunnellon. Lake Rousseau was formed by the Withlacoochee River, as part of the original Cross Florida Barge Canal project. Lake Rousseau is full of cypress trees that were flooded when the canal was built.
The abundant tree cover accomodate plenty of bluegill, redear sunfish, catfish, black crappie and largemouth bass. There is also a dam and lock system at one end on the lake.
